Tony Wrench talks Alternative Housing
"If you remove all societies demands, you can
Tony Wrench is one of the foremost pioneers of the low impact housing movement in the UK. His roundhouse in Wales was famously built for £3,000, was threatened with demolition for being built outside the planning legislation and ended up on the front cover of one of the Welsh Government’s groundbreaking planning advice supplements for sustainable building in the countryside.
This interview was filmed as an extra on the DVD of the feature film Lammas - The UK’s first planned ecovillage. Lammas is no longer available on DVD but can be purchased from the Living in the Future website (livinginthefuture.org) along with two other feature films about low impact living and ecovillages - Ecovillage Pioneers and Deep Listening.
Filmed in 2012 and updated with a message from Tony in 2023, we feel it is as relevant now as the day it was filmed - perhaps even more so. We hope you enjoy watching.
You can support Tony by purchasing his books, for sale direct from his website: thatroundhouse.info/books.htm or else on Amazon. They are:
Building a Low Impact Roundhouse and A Simple Roundhouse Manual.
P.S. This channel hosts two other very popular short films featuring the work of Tony and his partner Faith. The first tells the story of their struggle with the planners. A second film, documenting a roundhouse build with the Shift Network in Bristol is one of our most-watched films.

Parthenogenesis : A Filmpoem. Spring Equinox Honeybee Swarm
Переглядів 170Рік тому
A filmpoem about our Spring Equinox swarm. Finally, they flew. Out of the hive and over the trees, tumbling through air. He could hear them from the house, he said, when he called me and I came running, camera slung over one shoulder, pulling on a veil. As I stumbled towards the already-alighting swarm. They did not travel far, just down the hill a bit from their sisters. We followed the sound,...
Shoots with Roots! Balancing Energies - A Meditation for Spring Equinox
Переглядів 60Рік тому
Spring is the most likely time for honey bees to swarm. The preparation for this takes a lot of energy! As we feel ourselves blossoming into spring, come with me and ground your energy into the earth while we watch and listen to the sound of the bees. As our energy begins to flow outwards, how can we take care to resource ourselves? A dharma/nature contemplation with relaxing vibe.

Wild Bee Swarm Catalunya May 2022

It's our second year of beekeeping. We'd prepared a bait hive and tied it to a nearby tree. One day, we were sitting on the terrace and this happened! In 15 minutes, it was all over. Bees in the box. ps. We transferred them to a proper hive and they are currently thriving. A happy ending for now....

An intimate story of nine families moving back to the land. In 2009, Lammas ecovillage in Wales became the first legal low impact settlement in the UK. This is their story. Filmed over seven years, we share in the highs and lows of building from wood, straw and mud; coaxing barren land to produce food and learning to live inter-dependently with a new community.

I Go Among Trees by Wendell Berry
Переглядів 1,9 тис.5 років тому
I go among trees and sit still. All my stirring becomes quiet around me like circles on water. My tasks lie in their places where I left them, asleep like cattle. Then what is afraid of me comes and lives a while in my sight. What it fears in me leaves me, and the fear of me leaves it. It sings, and I hear its song. Then what I am afraid of comes. I live for a while in its sight. What I fear in...

Meditation for Winter Solstice (15 minutes)

Solstice - from the Latin "sol"- sun and "sistere" - to stand still, referring to the way the sun seems to pause in the sky at these turning points of the year. In this 15 minute meditation, we celebrate the solstice by pausing, by coming to stillness. In our busy world, it's easy to overlook the pause, and space can come to feel a little bit scary. Investigating the pause between the inhale an...

Thank you for talking straight foward, being honest about the ups and downs, the joy and motivation for expressing yourself. In my experience, volunteering in communes of Britain, I've certainly met strong people, also blessed by skills to make it all work, and wise enough with diplomacy and tact. Another type of member in those communes, were those who were burdened by issues, drinking or using drugs. The other members were inclined to turn a blind eye, allowing this person to live a parasitic life, with free food and shelter, while neglecting any form of contribution. Some members felt like "Oh, I feel sorry for him, he's unlucky, you know, we should be kind to him, for he's good at heart". Such an attitude may be typical British, for there's fear of confrontation in many Britons. They believe that alcoholism is a disease, and allow wreckage and violence because that person can't help himself. WHAT! Poppycocks! As a Dutch woman, I'd be clip and clear to such a person, telling him that he needs to leave. And so, communes are also safe havens for weak people, at times, see what I mean? 👋🧙‍♀️

This bunch of hippies don't seem to have much chance, for I expect, watching how many are dressed, and move around, start fighting, anger met with anger, I expect most of them don't have the skill to discuss in a rational way. That's doomed to be a lost case. You can't win, with emotional drama, from the authorities that aren't my friends as well, tbh.

Thanks David for this honest and heartfelt conversation about reading the land. As social beings which you mention, one way of reading is with a group. As you mention, we all have skills, when we prepare a small group to walk and talk to the land, different aspects can quite naturally present themselves to the diverse capacities of a group; particularly a group immersed in and empathetic feeling; sort of herd mentality at work for humans. I have had some wonderful experiences of shared perception with groups where no one is the leader but we are all part of the land organism.. Regards Pete

While it's true that many regulations make no sense, especially in low impact situations, did it never occur to anyone WHO WAS BUILDING A HOUSE that they should at least consider going to the council and talking to them about this project? It's okay not to meet standards if you live in a barn? That was the cunning plan? What did they think was going to happen when people noticed buildings going up?

Would my chair be able to get along the paths, are their steps that would stop me from participating? I wish people designers would consider that sort of thing when they starting planning communities.
